Downhill Castle and Musenden Temple
On the way to Downhill from Castlerock you can take the Bishops Road to Downhill Castle. This is a massive ruin of the palace built by Harvey Bruce, Earl of Bristol and Bishop of Derry in about 1780. It once housed a fine collection of art and antiquities brought back from grand tours of Europe.
In the same grounds this eccentric gentleman also built the Mussenden Temple. An attractive folly, inspired by the Tivoli Temple of Vesta, and situated within the precincts of Downhill Castle on the clifftop.
Both the temple and the surrounding views are some of the most photographed in Ireland.
